FORTERESSE DE GRADAČAC
Gradaščević fortress with an 18.20 m-high tower housing a museum, restaurant and several monuments.
Erected between 1765 and 1824, this fortress (Gradačačka Tvrđava) was the stronghold of the "Dragon of Bosnia," the national hero Husein-kapetan Gradaščević (1802-1834), the governor who launched the 1831-1832 revolt against the Ottomans. With its 18.20-meter-high tower, the small fort dominates the pretty city center of Gradačac (13,000 inhabitants). There is the family home of the hero, which houses a museum and restaurant, as well as several monuments built under his leadership, including the elegant Husejnija Mosque and the clock tower (21.50 m high).
