MONASTÈRE DE MOŠTANICA
Serbian Orthodox monastery occupied by nuns in the Moštanica valley, housing a monumental Romanesque church.
Located in the valley of the Moštanica River, a tributary of the Sava River, this Serbian Orthodox monastery (Manastir Moštanica/Манастир Моштаница) is said to have been founded in 1113. Dedicated to the archangel Michael, it has been destroyed eight times. Its monumental Romanesque church was built in the 16th century on the model of the monastery in Dečani (Kosovo), but it has lost its original frescoes. Occupied by nuns, the complex houses a relic of the tomb of Christ and the tomb of the haidouk (brigand) Petar Popović Pecija (1826-1875), who led two revolts against the Ottomans in the area.
