This is the traditional festival of the Sawa people. Originally, the festival was a gathering to take protective measures against invaders. Over the years, Ngondo has evolved into a ritual ceremony for communicating with the ancestors and water genies, the "Jengu", and asking for their protection. The message from the ancestors is collected by a diver in a sacred vase and read to the entire assembly gathered on the riverbank.
