The history of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul Cathedral is, more often than not, intertwined with the history of Catholicism in Cameroon. Douala's first Catholic building was erected in 1898 by the Pallotine Brothers from Germany; no trace of it remains today. The present building was constructed almost on the ruins of the first, in 1936, by the Spiritans, French missionaries. It remains one of the most important places of worship in the city's religious life.
