A chiefdom containing a number of remains, including the royal museum and the Achum, the most representative building in Bafut architecture.
The chiefdom of Bafut is a village governed by ancestral customs. The foundations of the palace date back more than two centuries, and among the oldest visible remains is the lower part of the 160-year-old Achum staircase. The Achum is the most representative building in Bafut architecture, and the sanctuary of the chieftaincy. The royal museum exhibits traditional Bafut objects. Ritual celebrations are organized by the chiefdom and the title of "mfor" (traditional chief) is passed on during these ceremonies.
