NATIONAL MUSEUM OF CAMEROON
The original building is none other than the former palace of the first President of the Republic, Ahmadou Ahidjo. In other words, it's a place where eras meet and mingle. It's Cameroon's largest museum, and after six years of renovation work, it was restored to its former glory in 2015. Over 5,000 m² and 30 rooms, you can discover all the historical and political aspects of the country. It's all here: the ten regions and their costumes, music and its traditional instruments, artifacts, photo archives tracing the country's history, unique items that belonged to traditional chiefs, objects charged with magic and belief. Even the saxophone of iconic musician Manu Dibango is on display. History is everywhere, both in the archives of the constitution and in the authentic photos of dignitaries who have succeeded one another in official functions.
Magnificent sculptures of a former queen and her subjects adorn the entrance to the building. Over the years, the exhibition has been enriched by national works previously presented abroad, contemporary art paintings, as well as objects from ancient Egypt. The guides are friendly and professional, some of them true enthusiasts who take you on a journey... This museum does justice to all the complexity, historical subtleties and cultural riches that characterize Cameroon and make it so difficult to summarize.
