A superb abbey, one of the most important buildings of the ducal era in Normandy, founded in 1063 by William the Conqueror, then Duke of Normandy. Comprising two parts (the conventual buildings and the church of Saint-Étienne), the Abbey aux Hommes is an architectural masterpiece of medieval art. The Hôtel de Ville de Caen now occupies the monastic complex, rebuilt in the 18th century around a Tuscan-style cloister. Consecrated in 1077, the Gothic-style abbey church houses the tomb of William the Conqueror.

We have popped in one beautiful store and bought some great souvenirs for ourselves, including calvados. Owner was really friendly.
