The festival falls on the tenth day of the year in the Islamic calendar. This is the anniversary of the death of Hossein, the Prophet's grandson, who was massacred with 72 members of his family in Kerbala in 680. This holiday is celebrated only by the Shiite community, but with great discretion. Today, it is a feast in honour of the underprivileged, which is an opportunity to give them zakat, the alms provided by the Koran for every good Muslim. It is also the children's day. It takes place 10 days after Raas Assana, the Muslim New Year.
