Eid el-Adha or Eid el-Kebir is the "great festival" of Morocco. It commemorates the sacrifice of Abraham, ready to kill his son at God's request. The latter sent him a ram, thus sparing Isaac's life. That is why this festival is commonly called "sheep festival". On the occasion of Eid el-Adha each family sacrifices a sheep and eats it according to a precise rite that lasts 3 days. Only considerations of the utmost importance, such as the great droughts of 1981 and 1982, which had considerably reduced the livestock population, disturbed this festival.
