The Tangier waterfront is fully developed and is an ideal place to jog from the Merkala Corniche to Malabata. Caution should be exercised, however, as (minor) assaults have been reported on the Malabata side. The Perdicaris or Rmilat park is very popular with the people of Tangier to enjoy a bit of greenery with a view of the sea, especially on weekends.
Sailing. There is no official boating license in Morocco. Only a coastal license based on the French one can be obtained from a sailing school located between Rabat and Casablanca. Consequently, your French coastal license is sufficient for sailing along the Moroccan coast and mooring in the Tangier marina.
Diving. PADI or SSI certification (the most widespread) will enable you to dive with an approved center in Moroccan waters. If you don't have an Open Water certification, you can take them with an approved diving center. A medical certificate is compulsory. Make sure your doctor issues one before you leave.
Fishing. Fishing is regulated in Morocco. Rivers and lakes are divided into 5 categories, each with its own special rules concerning fishing dates, fishing practices and the number of fish taken. It is forbidden to fish for brown trout, red-clawed crayfish, and small and large shad. Fishing permits are mandatory. It can be obtained from the provincial Water and Forestry Service. Non-resident foreigners must obtain a daily permit, which costs 200 DH. For further information, visit the Agence Nationale des Eaux et Forêts website: www.eauxetforets.gov.ma
Although you don't need to book in the strict sense of the word to take part in a sporting activity, you will need to go through an approved center or sports club. This is particularly the case for diving, if you plan to hire a boat for the day, play tennis or golf.
There are no major recurring international sporting events in Tangier or its region. The first edition of the "Globe 40", a round-the-world sailing race with stages, was launched from Tangier in 2022. The race brought together enlightened amateurs and professional skippers. The second edition will take place in 2025-2026.
If you take part in a paid sport, it is advisable to study the contract that binds you to a professional who supervises you, especially concerning what is included or not (equipment, meals...). If you rent a boat, ask to see it before paying to avoid disappointment.
