MARSHAN MOSQUE
One of the oldest mosques in Tangier, with an unparalleled elegance, located a few steps from the Marshan Gardens.
Located a stone's throw from the Marshan Gardens and the Royal Palace, this mosque was built in place of one of the oldest mosques in Tangier. Under Portuguese rule, it was used as a church and was returned to its true nature in 1684. At that time, the famous Minister of Defense, Hadj Mehdi Menebhi, and the Grand Vizier Hadj Mohamed Mohkri, both of whom were opposed to the colonial occupations, had this mosque of unparalleled elegance built and finished in the 19th century. Later, a minaret covered with green earthenware was added.
