TOMBEAU D'IBN BATTOUTA
Modest two-tone mausoleum of Ibn Battuta, the most famous Amazigh explorer of his time in Tangier
The most famous of Amazigh explorers was born in Tangier in 1304. Ibn Battouta belonged to a family of literate Muslims from the Berber Luwata tribe. He left his hometown at the age of 21 to make a pilgrimage to Mecca, from which he would not return until 24 years later, having traveled 120,000 km. His explorations took him to the Middle East, the Maldives, China, Russia... His travel stories are the stuff of legend. It's easy to overlook this modest, two-tone mausoleum of the greatest traveller of his time.
