PHOENICIAN NECROPOLIS
Despite a very ancient history, this necropolis is the only ancient vestige of Tangier. To be visited on the way to the Hafa café.
Dating from the Punic-Roman period, it is one of Tangier's only ancient remains. Close to the Café Hafa and overlooking the bay, the necropolis is a resting place for Tangierites, when the wind isn't blowing too hard... The 88 burials, dug into the soft rock, are thought to have been built between the 4th and 1st centuries B.C. Some are grouped in pairs, probably reserved for couples. Above the cliff, opposite the Institut Pasteur, lies a forest of eucalyptus trees, beneath which lies the most interesting part of the necropolis.
