CAPE SPARTEL LIGHTHOUSE
It is at the foot of this lighthouse that the waters of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic mix. Beyond the ocean, America.
In 1861, the authorities decided to build a lighthouse at Cape Spartel, in response to the numerous shipwrecks in the area. Sultan Abd el-Rahman gave the go-ahead for the project, and the lighthouse was inaugurated on October 15, 1864. Opened to the public in 2021, after a year of renovation, the interior now houses a museum recounting the history of its construction and an educational center for children. From up here, a breathtaking view unfolds over the Strait of Gibraltar and Tarifa in the distance.
