BAB BAHR DOOR
Bab Bahr or Sea Gate, near the stairs leading to the American Legation, overlooking the old tanneries
From here, the view of the sea is unparalleled. Bab Bahr means "door to the sea". It is one of Tangier's most famous gates, linking the medina walls to the city's port. Located a few steps from the stairs leading to the American Legation, formerly the U.S. Consulate in Morocco, the gate was built by the Portuguese between the 14th and 17th centuries. It overlooks the old tanneries, donated to the city by Pasha Alil in the 17th century, of which only ruins remain today.
