SIAGHINE STREET
Rue Siaghine or "Catherine Street" is one of the busiest streets in the medina, and has become known as "Jewellers' Street"
This is one of the busiest streets in the medina, accessed through the main gate of the Grand Socco square. It was called "Catherine Street" in the 17th century, in homage to Catherine of Braganza who had offered the cities of Bombay and Tangier to the King of England. In the past, the street was mostly inhabited by the Jewish community. Every second house was a bank, an import-export office or a money exchange. Today it is the "street of jewellers", some of which have kept their original names.
