Jewish cemetery of Tetouan, one of the oldest, with a more recent part, easily recognizable, with a terrace
This 6-hectare necropolis makes it the largest Jewish cemetery in Morocco and one of the oldest. It has 10,000 tombs, the oldest of which predate 1492, the date on which the Spanish expelled the Jews from Tetouan. These tombs are in the lower part of the cemetery and have a very singular appearance. They are oriented towards Jerusalem, in accordance with Hebrew tradition, and the stones are flush with the ground. The oblong stelae are ornamented, but without inscriptions, and are topped with a disc. The local tradition, found nowhere else, was that only men without descendants had their names inscribed on their tombs. Some of the graves have been excavated for archaeological purposes and Talmuds or pages of the holy book have been found buried with the deceased. The old part of the cemetery was named "Castilla". The more recent part is easily recognizable by its terraced layout. The tombs are lined up next to each other in a much more classical way. The newer tombs have inscriptions in Hebrew and Spanish. Some families brought the marble blocks from Spain or Italy. You will notice a few isolated graves in a corner of the cemetery. These were of people who failed to follow the rules of orthodoxy, including women (Rachel, Esther, Leah) who left the family home without being married.
