BAB JIAF
A door located in the north of the medina, with an interesting history, behind the souk des Tanneurs, in Tetouan
This gate in the north of the medina is neither the most imposing nor the most beautiful in the city, but it does have an interesting history. Located behind the souk des Tanneurs, at the foot of the cemetery hill, it was the gate used by the Jewish community to attend the funeral of one of their number. The door opened at the time of the funeral to allow the procession to pass through. For this reason, it was nicknamed the Gate of the Dead. During the Spanish period, the double-arched doorway topped by an elaborate lintel was known as puerta Alfonso.
