EL ENSANCHE DISTRICT
El Ensanche district in Tetouan, home to ancient buildings combining Spanish colonial and Mudejar Islamic styles
This district located at the south-west of the medina was built during the Spanish domination. The oldest buildings reflect the Spanish colonial style, mixed with the Islamic Mudejar style. From the 1930s onwards, the Baroque style was introduced into the city, before the modern European style became widespread under Franco. The most emblematic buildings are undoubtedly Dar Taïr, located in front of Hassan II Square, or the Avenida cinema on the Avenue of May 10th. It is very pleasant to stroll through this vast and perfectly designed architectural complex.
