Underground prison near the Sidi Almandri kasbah, built for 300,000 Christian slaves and prisoners
Tetouan is built on a limestone soil that forms a network of cavities and underground galleries. In the 16th century, these cavities were used as dungeons for the 300,000 Christian slaves and prisoners who contributed to the construction of the city. This underground prison, located near the Sidi Almandri kasbah, was lit by manholes. The prisoners slipped into it by means of a rope. At the end of the 18th century, Sultan Moulay Slimane released all the prisoners and the silos were left to be abandoned.
