A small shady square, organized around the kasbah, lined with cafes and restaurants very lively, located in Chefchaouen.
Small shady square, paved, lined with cafes and restaurants, very animated. It is the gateway to the medina and the ideal place to watch time go by. This square is organized around the kasbah, founded in 1471 by the emir Ali ibn Moussa ibn Rachid el-Alami. The latter was a warrior descended from the Prophet, who had fought in Granada on the side of the Muslims. He built this kasbah as a bastion of faith, to stop the progression of the Portuguese, who already controlled Ceuta. The kasbah therefore predates the construction of the city. It has 13 towers linked together by walkways. After a few centuries of tranquility, it resumed its role and importance as the main stronghold of the rebel Abdelkrim, who resisted the Spanish troops. His followers were massacred in 1925, and the kasbah became the home of the Spanish resident in Chefchaouen. One of the rooms was used as a judicial court. It has been classified as a National Heritage Site since 1994 and today houses a beautiful Andalusian garden, a small heritage interpretation center and the Ethnographic Museum, unfortunately very poorly documented. We also discover the historical prison where several political opponents, including Prince Ben Rachid, were imprisoned between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Nevertheless, the visit is worthwhile for the beautiful panoramic views from the Great Tower, also known as the Portuguese Tower.
