MEDINA OF CHEFCHAOUEN
Renowned as one of the most beautiful in Morocco, Chefchaouen's blue medina is a tranquil place where artisans live and breathe.
Major attraction of Chefchaouen, the medina is built on the side of the mountain. You can start your visit by walking up from the Uttam-el-Ham square. The small and narrow streets are, like the houses, whitewashed with nylon-tinted lime, which gives them pretty blue colors. This facilitates the flow of water, protects against the heat, and reminds the oldest inhabitants of their Andalusian origins. Traditionally, the medina is entirely repainted, by the inhabitants of the village, before the most important religious festivals, hence its exemplary cleanliness. The houses, which often have several floors, are sometimes equipped with wrought iron gates or moucharabieh delicately worked. You can't get lost in this medina because the exit is never far. You can therefore stroll at random and stroll through its shopping streets quietly. All along your stroll, craftsmen, weaving on the spot, will not fail to approach you and invite you to take tea. Beware, although the medina is still particularly peaceful, it is also a place of work for professional hawkers and now serves as a colorful theater for influencers and other Instagrammers who come to pose in the famous enchanting setting. Many groups of Chinese tourists have also invested the place for a few years. If it becomes rare to be able to stroll peacefully in high season, Chefchaouen finds its charm the rest of the year.
