PORTUGUESE CATHEDRAL

Cathedral, the only work of Gothic style in North Africa, remnant of the Portuguese occupation in Safi.
Built in the early 16th century, this cathedral was demolished by the Portuguese when they left. It is therefore limited to one room, a dark old crypt. The vault is decorated with a lion's mouth. The only thing that stands out is that this chapel, built by the master Joao Luis, is all that remains of the Safi cathedral built in 1519 and dedicated to Saint Catherine. This site is the only Gothic-style work of art in North Africa, unfortunately in ruins. The bell tower is also the remnant of a mosque minaret, an atypical phenomenon.
