ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF KSAR ES SEGHIR
Archaeological site, housing a well-preserved spa and a museum with objects found during excavations
Covering three hectares in the heart of the city, this archaeological site, once a medieval village, contains remains dating back 2,500 years. Since 2005, it has been the subject of numerous excavations and rehabilitation and development projects. A tour route has been set up to highlight the importance of trade in the ancient Mediterranean. The site dates back to the Phoenician era and was discovered by chance during the construction of the motorway linking Tangier Med to the Atlantic coast. Slightly set back from the coast and on high ground, it was served by a navigable wadi. It represents a typical choice of the Phoenicians, who preferred a dominant location, connected to the sea and surrounded by agricultural areas to meet their vital needs. Excavations show a constant occupation from the 6th century BC to the 13th century. Four civilizations succeeded one another at this site: Punic, Mauritanian, Roman and Islamic. The site, fortified by the Romans, preserved numerous ceramics, coins and earthenware jars. A well-preserved thermal establishment was revealed, including a changing room and cold, warm and hot water baths. Salting baths for fish and a kiln for firing ceramics were also discovered. A museum contains the objects found during the various excavations.
