REFUGE JARJEER FOR MULES AND DONKEYS
Refuge giving a second life to the donkeys and mules that are part of Marrakech's tourist identity, offering a recommended visit
Giving a second life to donkeys and mules in Morocco is the mission that Susan and Charles, former British lawyers who came to settle near the village of Oumnas, took on several years ago. Donkeys and mules are part of the tourist identity of Marrakech in particular, accentuating the picturesque vision that visitors have of the red city. In the countryside, these animals are an indispensable work force for man and are essential to the subsistence of the population. In a number of cases, harsh treatments cause great suffering (deformation, paralysis, loss of teeth, blindness, etc.) and shorten the life expectancy of the horses. At the shelter, nearly a hundred occupants, donkeys and mules, regain better health, a more than deserved rest and a benevolent sanctuary where they can retire with dignity. They are allowed to live there at their own pace, without the constraint of perpetual work. Their diet is precisely studied and they are entrusted to the good care of a team of five grooms from the village. "It is very important for us to work with the local population and for this cause to be understood", says the couple who will explain with passion, great kindness and great detail (in English, of course) this beautiful adventure which can only continue thanks to the generosity of the visitors. A visit is recommended, especially for those who feel concerned by the animal cause.
