Jewish quarter with a jewelers' souk and one of the liveliest markets in Essaouira.

In the heart of the mellah, the Jewish quarter, is the jewellers' souk which starts with Mohammed Zerktouni street. It is also in this picturesque alley and as far as Bab Doukkala, north of the ramparts, that you will see one of the liveliest markets in Essaouira. All around are numerous storytellers and musicians, mainly gnaouas. When Essaouira was reorganized according to Cornut's plans, this district was home to 17,000 Jews, or half the population, living mainly from the jewellery and cloth trade, faithful to tradition.

Beautiful neighborhood left completely abandoned for a large part. The electric wires hang, walls threaten to collapse, many houses have been abandoned, many Moroccans live under conditions of hygienic and living life. it is high time that the public authorities rehabilitated this neighborhood, which completely denounces the rest of the old town.
