HASSAN II MOSQUE
Guided tour to discover a remarkable mosque in Casablanca, the third largest in the world.
The sight of this immense edifice standing out against the steamy seaside air, when the light is at its most intense, is awe-inspiring. One's gaze wanders over the harmonious volumes of this monumental and rigorous architecture, adorned with geometric motifs, interlaced circular forms, punctuated by a typically Moroccan cursive decoration, the work of 12,500 craftsmen. Inaugurated on August 30, 1993 by King Hassan II, this majestic masterpiece seats 25,000 in the prayer hall, the 200 m-high minaret projects its beam of light towards Mecca at nightfall, and the construction work, overseen by Bouygues, cost almost half a billion euros. The third-largest mosque in the world after Mecca and Medina, it is a pioneer in technological innovation: its roof can be opened, its floor heats up when worshippers kneel on it, and its doors overlooking the sea are made of stainless steel. The mosque's location overlooking the ocean refers to the verse in the Koran specifying that God's throne is on the water. The guided tour takes in the prayer hall, with its gigantic proportions, granite columns adorned with hand-chiselled stucco, and cedar-wood ceilings supporting mezzanines for women's prayer. We then discover the large ablutions room with its tadelakt-coated walls, with its marble fountains, flower-shaped basins and traditional hammams.
