THE PLACE OF SIDI BOUSMARA
The green roof cottage, located on the square, houses the tomb of Sidi Bousmara. Legend tells us that this man, of passage to the city in the th century during a period of drought, would have struck the ground of his stick to bring a source of pure water to it. The inhabitants of this miraculous action would have asked him not to leave. The old man settled on this place to live as a hermit and planted the ficus behind which the mausoleum is located. The attentive visitor will note that several trees in the square are planted with nails. The custom is that by planting a nail (bousmara in Arabic), the recently resident in Casablanca is placed under the protection of the saint.
