QUWWAT-UL-ISLAM MOSQUE
This mosque, whose name means «the Force of Islam», was built by Iltutmish, the successor to Qutab-ud-Din. Notice the profusion of decorations on arches and the Koranic inscriptions. The stones of the mosque were reportedly taken from Hindu temples demolished by Muslims.
In the centre of the court, an iron pillar is one of the last vestiges of these sanctuaries. It was probably a standard bearer for vishnuite worship. Iltutmish was a great builder of another superb mosque in Ajmer, Rajasthan. From his living, he also made his tomb at the foot of Qutab Minar. Here again, you will admire the richness of the decorations probably carved by Hindu artists employed by the Muslim ruler. Left of the park, the tomb of the Sultan Ala-Din sultan, built at the beginning of the th century, is a little madrasas. custom of the day to mark the piety and generosity of the relatives of the deceased. Finally, on the nearby lawn you will find a huge base of stone carved. This is all that remains of Ala-i-Minar, an aborted project of Ala-ud-Din and which should have been twice as high as Qutab Minar!
