AKSHARDAM TEMPLE (AKSHARDHAM TEMPLE)
Temple built in 2005, the largest Hindu complex in India, built by craftsmen and volunteers, to be visited at sunset.
Despite its amusement park-like atmosphere, don't miss this temple, which took over 35 years to build. It's at sunset that the place really shines, but this is also the time of day when there are the most visitors. Along with the Red Fort, the Akshardham Temple is one of Delhi's most visited monuments.
Only built in 2005, more than 7,000 craftsmen and 3,000 volunteers took it in turns to build and sculpt what is now India's largest Hindu complex. Located to the east of the Yamuna, the temple blends Rajasthani, Gujarati and Mughal architectural elements and styles. The main temple is 43 meters high and covers a footprint of one hectare, all carved in pink Rajasthani sandstone and white Carrara marble. The structure is supported by 234 ornate pillars, and the interior houses 20,000 statues of Hindu gods, saints and other mystical figures. The Temple of Values, or Sahajanand Pradarshan, features a rather strange permanent exhibition retracing the life of Guru Swaminarayan. Characters combining animation and robotics recreate the essential elements of the life of this 18th-century Hindu saint and founder of a sectarian Hindu movement.
At nightfall (around 6 p.m.), a sound and light show sets ablaze what is India's largest well. Spectators take their places on one of the well's 2,870 steps to admire the show dedicated to the circle of life.
