BIRLA MANDIR (LAXMINARAYAN MANDIR)
A red-and-white sanctuary where devotees come to worship Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi, goddess of fortune and prosperity.
In 1938, Mahatma Gandhi agreed to inaugurate this great red and white shrine on the condition that all castes would be allowed to enter and that it would not be open only to Hindus. At the entrance there is a plaque welcoming all social classes and all religions, including the Untouchables. Devotees come here to worship Vishnu in the form of Narayan, and his consort Lakshmi, goddess of fortune and prosperity.
