Here, in this place now left dormant, the British coronation ceremonies known as durbar were held. A sandstone obelisk commemorates the coronation of King George V proclaimed Emperor of India in 1911 before more than 100 000 people. The statue of the sovereign, 22 m high, is surrounded by those of former vice-kings such as Lord Hardinge and Lord Willingdon.
