The collection. Kalamadevi Chattopadhyay, an important figure in the independence movement, realized that Nehru's drive to modernize the country was in danger of wiping out Indian craftsmanship. She began collecting pieces from all over the country. By the early 1980s, the collection had amassed enough works to consider building a museum. Today, the collection includes more than 35,000 works.
The museum. Its rooms offer a 360° view of Indian craftsmanship and are a valuable introduction to traditional techniques. You can admire beautiful woodwork in the butha carving gallery, bronze statues, naive paintings, paper mache figurines and pottery. Don't miss the wooden haveli in the court crafts gallery or the superb collection of tribal art objects. The textile room is also worth a visit with its magnificent saris, shawls and hangings, with incredibly delicate embroidery.
