GOVIND DEV TEMPLE
Red sandstone temple built in 1590 by the Maharaja of Amber, Man Singh , a place where tribes of monkeys squat
Govind Dev means "cowherd God". This red sandstone temple was built in 1590 by the Maharaja of Amber, Man Singh I. It used to have seven floors. It used to have seven floors, but the fanatical Muslim emperor Aurangzeb had the upper four levels destroyed. At the time of our visit, tribes of monkeys were squatting in the temple so that it was impossible to approach it. Seen from the outside, the building remains an architectural marvel, even if a restoration would not be a luxury... You can always console yourself by visiting, opposite, the Sri Ranganatjih temple.
