SARDUL SINGH CHHATRI
Cenotaph housing the oldest wall paintings in Shekhawati and showing Sardul Singh dividing his kingdom between his 5 sons
Built on the cremation ground of the rao Sardul Singh of Jhunjhunu, the cenotaph houses the oldest wall paintings in Shekhawati. They evoke episodes from the Ramayana and the life of Krishna. We see Krishna raising Mount Govardhan with his little finger in order to protect humanity against a flood caused by the god Indra. This myth evokes the transition from Vedism to modern Hinduism, probably around 500 BC. Another detail of the dome represents Sardul Singh himself, dividing his kingdom among his five sons.
