The double Ruia Haveli belonged to one of the most influential families in the city, the Ruia. Built in 1880, he discovered several British portraits. Merchants, nicknamed the «kings of cotton», the Ruia also built the Hanuman temple in the north of the city. With the advent of the large ports, they left the region permanently for Calcutta.
