SACRED LAKE

This rectangular lake is lined with ghats (steps) and small traditional buildings painted in white that are reflected in its waters. Highly sacred site of Hinduism because of the only temple dedicated to Brahma the Creator God, its mention has been found on coins dating from the 4th century BC. From dawn, many pilgrims gather on the ghats, at the edge of the lake, with the aim of carrying out their ritual ablutions and purifying their soul. Small cabins have been installed to allow people to change clothes. While walking around the lake barefoot (wearing shoes is forbidden), you will meet sadhus, whose spiritual approach is more or less sincere. You will recognize them by their thick beards, their dreadlocks, their saffron tunics and their shilom. They often arouse the blissful admiration of some Westerners dazzled by their wisdom... or eager to share a shilom. If the spectacle is highly spiritual and charming, photos are strictly forbidden.

The spiritual strength of the place also attracts, unfortunately, beggars and hustlers of all kinds. You will surely be accosted by Brahmins who will try to get money from you under the cover of their blessing for a flower or a cotton thread tied to your wrist. Traditional musicians of the Bhopa caste have taken up residence not far from Pushkar. They come every day to play a few notes of music with their rawanata (traditional hurdy-gurdy) in order to earn a few rupees themselves.
