The Mewar festival coincides with Gangaur and celebrates the arrival of spring. It takes place in Udaipur, the capital of this ancient royal state. The effigies of Gangaur and Isar, Parvati and Shiva, are dressed in colorful clothes and embroidered with gold thread. The girls march in procession through the city with the idols on their heads to Lake Pichola. The statues are then taken by boat across the lake. Cultural performances of traditional songs and dances enliven the evenings and are held on the ghats of the city.
