DEVI KUND
A small lake whose shores are used for royal cremations and are home to the cenotaphs of the maharajas and their families
The banks of the small Devi Kund Lake (Lake of the Goddess) are used for royal cremations and host the cenotaphs of the maharajas and their families. Among this impressive series of white marble funerary monuments, Surat Singh's is particularly noteworthy, its ceiling still decorated with frescoes. Before the British banned sati in the early 19th century, ranis immolated themselves in the royal pyre, as they were forbidden to outlive their husbands. Each chhatri indicates the precise location of a maharaja's cremation.
