REWA KUND GROUP
Historic site comprising the Baz Bahadur palace, built in 1509, and the Rupmati pavilion, which can be visited along with the Nil Kanth palace
This third paying group of two buildings is located south of the village, about 3 kilometers away. It is the most enchanting group of monuments because of the romantic and tragic history that took place there.
Baz Bahadur Palace. The waters of the Rewa Kund reservoir are sacred and were carried to the palace by an aqueduct, which is located to the north. Baz Bahadur was the last ruler of the independent state of Mandu. He had this two-story palace built in 1509, long before he came to power. The building blends Mughal and Rajasthani styles. The entrance is by 40 imposing steps, then the visitor is greeted by large majestic arches.
Rupmati Pavilion: undoubtedly one of the most beautiful buildings of Mandu. Located at the top of a cliff, the site was initially a military observation post. Baz Bahadur requisitioned it to build a house for Rupmati, his mistress, a famous Hindu singer. From there, Rupmati could observe the Narmada river which meanders at the bottom of the plain. This is for the legend. In reality, the pavilion would have been built in several phases and the style of the arches and pillars suggests that it would have been completed a century before the existence of Rupmati. The legend lives on in the traditional folk songs which give the love story of Rupmati and Baz Bahadur a tragic ending. Akbar having heard about the beauty of Rupmati would have put his troops on the march on Mandu, forcing Baz Bahadur to flee.
