Shri Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga
The island's most sacred temple, containing a jyotilinga symbolizing the manifestation of Shiva in the form of an omkar
The most sacred temple of the island, because it contains a jyotirlinga. There are only twelve of them in India and they symbolize a place where Shiva manifested himself. Here, it has taken the form of an omkar and the legend says that Shiva comes to sleep there every night. Three puja (prayers) are celebrated every day. The morning one is celebrated by the priest of the temple, the midday one by the priest of Scindia and the evening one by the priest of Holkar. Nobody knows exactly when the temple was built. It takes the attributes of the temples of northern India. Bath of crowd assured.
