This four-day Hindu festival celebrating the goddess Durga is Kolkata's most important religious event.

Goddess Durga is worshipped for four days by the people of northern India. This festival is the most important in the Hindu calendar in Kolkata, but it is also celebrated with fervor in Odisha. Statues of the goddess are paraded through the streets to the cheers of the crowd. Pandals, impressive and colorful ephemeral worship structures, are built throughout the city. On the last night, women gather to dance while beating sticks. The festivities are full of noise and color.
