SHAHEED MINAR
Doric column with Turkish-inspired cupola, built in 1828 in memory of Sir David Ochterlony, climb to the top.
Near Maidan Park, you can't miss the Ochterlony Monument. Since 1969 and the accession to government of the communists in Bengal, it has been renamed Shaheed Minar (the memorial of the martyrs). It is a Doric column of 48 m height, crowned by a dome of Turkish inspiration. It was erected in 1828 in memory of Sir David Ochterlony, who commanded the British Indian troops against the Nepalese armies in 1814-1816. After being closed to the public for a long time, it is now possible to climb to the top of the column.
