GHOOM MONASTERY
Famous Buddhist monastery dating from 1850, with yellow roof and golden statue of Maitreya Buddha.
Located some 8 km south of the town, on the main road, Ghum Monastery or Ying Choeling is the most famous Buddhist temple in the region. This superb yellow-roofed edifice dates from 1850, in reference to the Gelugpa current to which it belongs, and whose monks are nicknamed the Yellow Caps. You'll be warmly welcomed by the monks, who are very proud of their golden statue of Buddha Maitreya (the future Buddha). Down the road is Samten Choeling monastery, built in 1875.
