RAM BAGH OR "GARDEN OF REST"
Garden located on the east bank of the Yamuna, offering a beautiful panorama of the back of the Taj Mahal, a good spot for photos
India's very first Mughal-style garden is a faithful replica of Emperor Babur's favorite garden in Kabul. The body of Babur, founder of the Mughal Empire, was temporarily interred here in 1530 before moving to his eternal resting place in the Afghan capital. Situated on the east bank of the Yamuna River, it offers a fine panoramic view of the rear of Chini Ka Rauza. Its terraced architecture may appeal to landscape lovers, but the visit nevertheless proves disappointing for the price of the entrance ticket. The garden is divided into 4 main sections by an interplay of paths and canals, representing an idealized version of paradise in Islam, a garden of abundance with a river running through it. The sloping ground creates a waterfall effect. Two pavilions face the Yamuna and are linked by a tahkhana, an underground room used to cool off in hot summers. The garden as presented dates back to the reign of Jahangir (1605-1627) and is said to have been laid out by his wife Nour Jahan. It was here that the emperor is said to have waited for the best astral moment to enter Agra after conquering the Kangra fort.
Lovers, youth gangs and a few tourists come here to watch the sun set over the river. But above all, it's the kingdom of the monkeys! Be very careful with yourself and your belongings, as these beasts can be very aggressive.
