KESHAVDEV JI TEMPLE
Complex housing a large, somewhat kitsch statue of Krishna driving Arjuna's chariot, a pleasant place to discover in Mathura
Overlooking the complex, you can't miss the large and somewhat kitschy statue of Krishna driving Arjuna's chariot. The Krishna temple otherwise called Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, "birthplace of Lord Krishna", was erected in 1975. It is not exactly at the place where the blue god was born since Aurangzeb destroyed it. You will discover a very kitsch decoration made of pink walls and colored frescos relating the exploits of the god. You can even go down into the cave where the divine birth took place 3 500 years ago. But don't be claustrophobic and be prepared to wait in line for a while. This cave is the reason why so many pilgrims come from all over India.
You will see behind the temple complex, the famous mosque built by Aurangzeb. It is absolutely charming but is not in activity any more in order to pacify a little the relations between the two religious communities. Moreover, if you do not wish to live a great moment of solitude, we recommend you not to evoke this "sensitive" subject with the inhabitants.
Walking around the complex is really pleasant: gardens, an open-air space (and a covered one) for meetings, another space for the reception and accommodation of pilgrims, stores and loudspeakers relating the exploits of Krishna. The atmosphere of this place of pilgrimage will certainly remind you of that of a big fair: colorful, warm and very human. In India, the fervor is expressed in the noise.
