THE RESIDENCY
Mecca of the Cipayan revolt, a place to visit for the history of the heyday of the Naba of Avadh and the mutiny at Meerut
The Residency is a Mecca of the Cipayan Revolt. The heyday of the Avadh Mogul came to an end with the annexation of the province by the British on February 11, 1856. On 30 May 1857 a mutiny broke out in Meerut and reached Lucknow by the end of June. The population allied with the mutineers and attacked the British, who entrenched themselves in the Residency. It housed up to 3,000 people and only 980 survived the famine and epidemics. This first war of independence shook the British power and revealed India as a colonized country.
