CONSTANTIA
School housed in the beautiful Costantia palace, one of 5 schools founded with the estate of Claude Martin, a French general
Claude Martin, a French general of the French East India Company, built a superb palace at the end of the 18th century, the Constantia. It has been home to La Martinière College since 1845. It is one of five schools (two in Lucknow, two in Kolkata and one in Lyon, Martin's native city) founded with his estate after his death, at his request. The latter rests in the basement of the palace, where the students are taught in the most Indian way, but still respecting the hour of prayer in the building's church.
