JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK
520 km² reserve home to over 550 different species: elephants, tigers, leopards, Himalayan black bears, monkeys, deer, etc
The 520 square kilometer reserve is home to more than 550 different species: elephants, tigers, leopards, Himalayan black bears, monkeys, barking deer, sambar deer, axis deer, pythons, and also nearly 600 species of birds. Set against the foothills of the Himalayas, the park alternates between lowland forest areas and steep areas, ideal habitat for the tiger. A few clearings mark the former villages that have been relocated outside. To the west, a dam on the Ram Ganga River has created a huge artificial pond that provides water for the animals in all seasons.
There are several access gates to the reserve that serve different areas:
Dikhala Gate: located 19 km from Ramnagar, it is the most frequented and for good reason: it is here that the chances of seeing the animals are the greatest. Open from October 15 to June 30.
Jhirna Gate : 16 km from Ramnagar. This is the area where bears are most often seen. Open all year round.
Durgadevi Gate: 28 km from Ramnagar, open from October 15 to June 30.
Bijrani Gate : the entrance is at Aamdanda, 1 km from Ramnagar. Open from October 15 to June 30.
Dhangarhi Gate : it allows access to the Dikhala area, the largest of the park. From here the Ramganga Tour starts and lasts all day. Open from November 15 to June 15.
Sitabani Gate : not part of the reserve, you have to ask for a permit from the Sitabani Forest Department. Open all year round. Ideal to observe the birdlife and the beautiful landscapes.
