BRAHMA SAROVAR
Sacred pool where pilgrims from all over India come to purify themselves, pray on the ghats or mourn after a death
Brahma, the Creator, is said to have founded this sacred pool himself. Many pilgrims come from all over India to purify themselves here. On the ghats, hundreds of sadhus pray, discuss or smoke their shilom. It is customary for a widow to go to the shores of the lake to mourn her husband, ten days after his death. In December or January, on the occasion of the festival of Gita Jayanti which celebrates the birth of the Bhagavad Gîtâ, pilgrims flock by the thousands and the colorful crowd spreads a particular atmosphere of festival and meditation.
